Planting a new tree is one of the best investments you can make in your landscape — but knowing how to plant a tree the right way makes all the difference. Proper planting helps your tree grow strong, healthy roots and thrive for years to come.
At Greengate Turf & Pest, our team recently installed a 45-gallon magnolia tree, and we filmed the process step-by-step. While the video shows how to plant a magnolia tree, these same techniques apply to any tree you plant — from oaks and maples to crape myrtles and citrus trees.

Step 1: Choose the Right Spot
Before you dig, take time to select the best location for your tree. Consider the tree’s mature size, root spread, and sunlight requirements. Avoid planting too close to structures, sidewalks, or power lines, and make sure the site allows for good air circulation and drainage.
Step 2: Dig a Hole Twice as Wide as the Root Ball
A good planting hole should be twice as wide as the root ball but only as deep. This gives roots room to expand outward while preventing the tree from settling too deep, which can lead to poor growth or root rot.
Step 3: Enrich the Soil
We blend enriched garden soil with the existing soil to create a healthy, nutrient-rich environment for the roots. In Houston’s dense clay soils, this extra step helps improve drainage and oxygen flow, both of which are critical for new trees.
Step 4: Remove the Tree from Its Container
Next, we carefully remove the tree from its planting pot while keeping the root ball intact. Loosening any circling roots at this stage can also help encourage outward growth once planted.
Step 5: Position the Tree
Every tree has a “face” — the side that naturally looks fuller or more attractive. We position that side toward the most visible area of the landscape. The top of the root ball should sit slightly above ground level to promote airflow and prevent excess moisture buildup around the trunk.
Step 6: Backfill and Fertilize
Once the tree is in place, we backfill the hole with the soil mixture and add organic tree fertilizer to promote strong root development and overall health. Lightly tamp the soil to eliminate air pockets but avoid compacting it too tightly.
Step 7: Stake and Secure
Young trees need a little support while their roots establish. We install tree stakes and arbor ties to stabilize the trunk and protect against wind damage. These supports can typically be removed after the first growing season.
For our 45-gallon tree, staking the large tree was an essential part of how to plant a magnolia tree. Without stakes and ties, the tree would have easily toppled over.
Step 8: Install a Tree Bubbler
For consistent watering, we install a tree bubbler — a small irrigation device that delivers deep, even moisture directly to the root zone. This helps ensure your new tree gets the right amount of water without waste or runoff.
Step 9: Water and Maintain
Regular watering is crucial for the first year after planting. Most newly planted trees need deep watering once or twice a week, depending on rainfall and soil type. Consistent moisture helps roots spread and anchor the tree firmly in place.
