Sprinkler and Irrigation Service FAQ

How often should I water my lawn?

Watering requirements vary lawn to lawn, depending on landscaping, grading, sun exposure, time of year, and several other factors. To get an idea of how much water your lawn might need, check out our blog for seasonal watering tips.

What does GreenGate's 20 point sprinkler inspection include in the sprinkler bundles?
  • Seasonal controller adjustments (start, stop, and run times)
  • Adjusting spray heads for proper coverage
  • Straightening, raising, or lowering sprinkler heads as needed
  • Verifying rain sensors (if applicable)
  • Checking and replacing controller backup batteries
  • Inspecting nozzles and screens for clogs
  • Identifying yard hot spots
  • Verifying all zones are working correctly
  • Cleaning drip line filters (if applicable)
  • Checking for system leaks
  • Manually testing valves
How does GreenGate know if my irrigation system is working correctly?

Signs of a well-functioning system include even water distribution, no dry spots, and no visible leaks. Regular checks and professional inspections can help maintain efficiency.

Can an irrigation system save water?

Yes, modern irrigation systems are designed to use water efficiently, reducing waste and ensuring plants receive the right amount of water.

What is a smart irrigation system?

A smart irrigation system uses technology like weather sensors and soil moisture sensors to adjust watering schedules automatically, optimizing water usage.

What is drip line irrigation?

Drip line irrigation is a highly efficient watering system that delivers water directly to the root zone of plants through a network of tubes and emitters. Instead of spraying water into the air like traditional sprinklers, drip lines slowly release water along the ground, ensuring plants get the moisture they need—right where they need it most.

This system uses flexible tubing with built-in emitters spaced evenly along the line. The emitters “drip” water at a controlled rate, reducing waste from runoff and evaporation. It’s especially effective for flower beds, shrubs, and areas with uneven ground.

Why is my irrigation system not turning on?

Common reasons include issues with the controller, electrical problems, or damaged valves. Checking these components can help identify the problem.

What should I do if I notice dry spots in my lawn?

Dry spots could be due to clogged nozzles, improper sprinkler head alignment, or insufficient water pressure. Inspecting and adjusting these parts can help.

Why is there water pooling in my yard?

Pooling water can indicate overwatering, leaks in the system, or poor drainage. Identifying and fixing the source of the problem is crucial.

Does GreenGate do backflow preventer repairs and replacements?

Yes, we can help with backflow preventer repair and replacements. We typically like to do a service call first to diagnose the issue fully. Sometimes, full replacements of the backflow preventer valve is not necessary.

What is an irrigation backflow preventer?

An irrigation backflow preventer—also called a backflow preventer valve or backflow preventer device—is a safety component that keeps contaminated water from flowing backward into your home’s clean water supply. In an irrigation system, it stops fertilizers, lawn chemicals, or standing water from being siphoned back through sprinkler lines and into your drinking water. This device is required by most cities to protect public water systems and ensure your property’s irrigation stays safe and compliant.

Do I need to winterize my irrigation system?

Yes, it’s important to winterize your backflow preventer, and therefore winterize your sprinkler system, to prevent the components from freezing or cracking. Since we have much milder winters than Northern climates, a full blow-out of the pipes underground is unnecessary.

Can I customize my irrigation system for different plants?

Yes, irrigation systems can be customized with different zones to cater to the specific watering needs of different plants and areas in your landscape.

Are there any additional features I can add to my irrigation system?

Additional features include rain sensors, soil moisture sensors, smart controllers, and high efficiency sprinkler heads that can enhance efficiency and ease of use.

Why should I install an irrigation system?

An irrigation system ensures efficient water use, provides consistent watering, saves time, and can enhance plant growth and health.

What are common repairs or adjustments on irrigation systems?
  • Backflow Preventer Repair
  • Backflow Preventer Replacement
  • Sprinkler Valve Replacement
  • Sprinkler Head Replacement
  • Sprinkler Head Repair
  • Adjusting sprinkler heads for better water coverage on the lawn
How do I winterize a sprinkler system?

Great question! Many customers wonder how to winterize their irrigation system on their own.

irrigation system winterization

  1. First, remove any and all old foam and tape on the piping surrounding the backflow valve. Confirm that all valves are functioning by turning them.
  2. Turn off/close supply side valve.
  3. Drain supply side line.
  4. Drain opposite line that feeds your irrigation system to first valve.
  5. Drain the back flow preventer.
  6. If not already there, install a supply shut off valve. This allows you to shut off the irrigation system if any repairs are needed without having to shut the water off in your home.
  7. To decrease the chances of a busted backflow or busted pipes over the winter, we also recommended installing two different valves on both sides of the backflow to ensure all water is drained out.
  8. Install pipe insulation on both lines.
  9. Wrap insulation with pvc, uv protected covering.
  10. Install insulated, uv protected, fire resistant bag over back flow preventer.
When should I winterize my irrigation system?

Knowing when to winterize your sprinkler system is crucial! Doing so too early could cause your lawn to miss out on needed watering, and doing it too late could result in a cracked backflow preventer. We typically recommend winterizing in November of each year.

Smart Controllers

A smart irrigation controller automatically adjusts your watering schedule based on real-time weather data and seasonal changes, helping conserve water while keeping your landscape healthy. The Hunter Hydrawise is a popular option, offering Wi-Fi connectivity, app-based control, and predictive watering that skips or adjusts cycles based on forecasted rain or temperature shifts.

High-Efficiency Nozzles

High-efficiency nozzles are designed to deliver water more evenly and slowly, reducing runoff and improving absorption for healthier plants and lawns. Hunter MP Rotators are a leading choice, using multi-stream, rotating technology to apply water at a lower rate, which improves coverage, saves water, and enhances system efficiency.

Drip Irrigation

Drip irrigation delivers water directly to the root zone of plants through a network of tubing and emitters, minimizing evaporation and runoff. This highly efficient method is ideal for flower beds, gardens, and shrubs, ensuring deep, consistent watering while conserving water and promoting healthier growth.

Flow Meters

Flow meters monitor the amount of water moving through your irrigation system, helping detect leaks, breaks, or unusual usage. When paired with smart controllers like Hunter Hydrawise, they provide real-time alerts and detailed water-use reports, protecting your landscape and preventing costly water waste.

Rain Sensors

A rain sensor automatically pauses your irrigation system when it detects rainfall, preventing unnecessary watering and conserving water. Models like the Hunter Mini-Clik work seamlessly with most controllers, ensuring your system only runs when needed, even during unexpected showers.
